The Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture in the centre of Edinburgh was established in 1831. Its collection was originally based around its Diploma Collection, comprised of works selected by their members on the election as a Royal Scottish Academician (RSA). Many of these works were transferred to the Scottish national collection in 1910, but since then its 20th Century Collection has continued to grow and flourish through the Diploma Collection, enhanced by purchases through their annual exhibition most especially. In 1973 it received the William Gillies bequest of hundreds of artworks, and major studio gifts have followed in more recent years. Part One: John MacDonald Aiken to Ernest Stephen Lumsden.

Artists featured in this Curation: John MacDonald Aiken (1880–1961), Natasha Aldrich-Blake (b.1971), David Alison (1882–1955), James Bell Anderson (1886–1938), Mary Nicol Neill Armour (1902–2000), Barbara Balmer (1929–2017), Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912–2004), Mardi Barrie (1930–2004), Penelope Beaton (1886–1963), Elizabeth V.
