Painter, mural artist, designer and teacher, born in Busby, Lanarkshire. Was married to the artist Kathleen Mann. Crawford studied at Glasgow School of Art under Maurice Greiffenhagen, 1919–23; at Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1924–5; and at St Martin’s School of Art. He joined the staff of Glasgow School of Art in 1925, where he was an influential teacher, and was head of painting until 1948 when he became head of Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen. He was there until 1954, then was principal of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, 1954–64. Crawford painted a strong series of portraits in the 1930s. Among his murals were some for the Roman Catholic chapel at Bellahouston and others for John Brown’s shipyard and Scottish Brewers, Glasgow.
