Artist in acrylic and gouache, and teacher, born in Edinburgh, where he lived. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where he was on the staff from 1960, studying under William Gillies and Robin Philipson, and obtaining his master’s degree with honours, 1951–8; gained an Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship to France, did a postgraduate scholarship and then obtained an Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship to Spain, Morocco and Italy. Among a series of awards was the RSA Guthrie Award, 1963; May Marshall Brown Awards, 1979 and 1986; Grampian Region Award, 1980; and Alexander Graham Munro Award, 1991. Campbell became a member of SSA, 1966; SWLA, 1967; RSW, 1976; and RSA, 1981, being its librarian in 1982. Campbell took part in many group shows, especially in Scotland, from 1962.
