Painter and teacher, born in Edinburgh. Her father was the painter George Whitton Johnstone, her uncle the artist James Heron and she married the painter Douglas Macbeth Sutherland. She enrolled at Edinburgh College of Art in 1908 and in 1910 gained a travelling scholarship to Italy, and also studied in Paris. In 1914 she was appointed to staff of Edinburgh College of Art, having to relinquish her teaching post, as a married woman, in 1924. She exhibited at RSA regularly for many years from 1912, at RA, with Edinburgh Group, jointly with Cecile Walton in 1924, and elsewhere. In 1983 Aberdeen Art Gallery gave her a major memorial show which toured, then in 1987 Bourne Fine Art in Edinburgh and London held a joint Johnstone and Sutherland exhibition.
