Alexander Kellock Brown was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 11 February 1849. By the late 1850s he had moved to Glasgow. After studying at Glasgow School of Art and at Heatherley's School of Fine Art in London, her returned to Glasgow where he embarked on a career as a sculptor and as a painter. He first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh in 1871 and continued to do so virtually every year until his death 51 years later. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in London; the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; and at the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in Edinburgh. He was elected a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (RI) in 1878; an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy (ARSA) in 1892; and a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) in 1908.
His address was given as 48 Renfrew Street, Glasgow in 1871 and 1873; 1 Athole Terrace, Crosshill, Glasgow in 1874 and 1875; Studio, 65 West Street, Glasgow in 1876 and 1877; 113 West Regent Street, Glasgow in 1878 and 1881; 162 Wellington Street, Glasgow in 1882 and 1888; Wellington Studios, Glasgow in 1889 and 1894; Helenslee, Helensburgh in 1895; 105 West George Street, Glasgow in 1896 and 1897 and 1899; 104 West George Street, Glasgow in 1900 and 1904; 152 Renfrew Street, Glasgow in 1905 and 1922. He died in Lamlash, Arran, Scotland on 9 May 1922.
