What is Art UK's Visual Literacy Week?
Art UK's Visual Literacy Week started an important national conversation about the transformative skill of visual literacy.
It took place from 30th September to 6th October 2024 and introduced our flagship learning programme, The Superpower of Looking.
Educators, academics and art lovers of all ages were invited to dive into the fascinating world of image interpretation, discover how we use visuals to convey powerful meanings and explore what it means to be visually literate in the digital age.
Through stories, webinars, social media content and a symposium at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, we explored why visual literacy is a critical skill that everyone should possess.
For schools, we hosted the biggest-ever virtual school trip, the Superpower Art Adventure, with artist Sarah Graham.
In Stoke-on-Trent, home to the Art UK office, we brought people together for a live tagging event.
Throughout the week visual literacy experts and Art UK advocates including Bob & Roberta Smith RA, Amy Herman, Alison Cole, Ferren Gipson and Rebecca Salter RA, shared their thoughts.

We invite arts organisations, sector leaders, museums and collections to join in the conversation and discover why visual literacy is being recognised as the fourth pillar of education, driven by The Superpower of Looking programme.
The Superpower of Looking
The Superpower of Looking is Art UK's flagship learning programme, generously funded by Freelands Foundation. This innovative and inclusive programme seeks to transform the visual literacy skills of primary school children across the UK, taking the world of art and images as its starting point.
A set of free digital resources supports children to develop an essential superpower: the ability to really 'see' in an image-saturated world – to critically observe, analyse, question, interpret and empathise. This new vision for learning aims to equip children with the vital lifelong skill of visual literacy and promises to nurture a love of art, providing children with the cultural capital every child is entitled to.
