Founded in 1889 as The Whitworth Institute and Park in memory of the industrialist Sir Joseph Whitworth for 'the perpetual gratification of the people of Manchester', The Whitworth has a collection of 60,000 artworks with in the 20th Century both European artists including Ernst Barlach and Giorgio de Chirico represented alongside an exemplary collection of Modern British artists.
