Opened in 1900, the 20th Century Collection of Victoria Art Gallery in Bath is particularly notable for a number of significant artists painting the city and its architecture, including Walter Sickert and John Nash. There are strong holdings of works by Joseph Southall, Glyn Philpot and Helen Cochrane, whilst the nearby location of the Bath Academy of Art at Corsham encouraged a number of artists such as Andrew Lanyon and William Scott to live in the area and they are represented in the Collection. A painting by fireman artist Wilfrid Haines is a reminder that Bath suffered significant bomb damage during the Second World War, whilst a painting by Swiss artist Paul Klee is an unexpectedly welcome addition to the Collection.

Artists featured in this Curation: Maxwell Ashby Armfield (1881–1972), Kenneth Armitage (1916–2002), John Armstrong (1893–1973), Clare Atwood (1866–1962), Gillian Ayres (1930–2018), Michael Ayrton (1921–1975), Peter Blake (b.1932), Sandra Blow (1925–2006), William Brooker (1918–1983), Robert Buhler (1916–1989), and 48 more
