Sylvia Gosse was a painter of interiors, still lifes and street scenes. She was from a wealthy, upper class family. Her parents were unenthusiastic about her desire to pursue an artistic career. The painter Sickert, who knew her parents, persuaded them that she had artistic talent. Sickert lived in Dieppe for several years, and Gosse had a cottage close to his. The Place Saint Jacques, with its impressive church, was a favourite subject for Sickert. It is Dieppe’s market place, normally crowded and busy. In this view, with the shadows of early morning stretching across the foreground, we see the square almost deserted. The covers are being taken off the carousel, as the Place gets ready for another busy day.
