The term 'medieval' refers to the Middle Ages, a period which lasted from the late Roman era in the fifth century AD to the beginning of the Renaissance in the fourteenth. In the past it was sometimes referred to as the 'dark ages' between the ancient and modern period, and before the revival in classical learning that came with the Renaissance. The visual arts flourished during the Middle Ages, although much of the art produced was religious in nature.
