Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery was established by the Carlisle Corporation in 1893 and housed in an historic 17th Century town house before more recent extensions into the city Guildhall. The strength within its 20th Century Collection is mainly thanks to an art purchase scheme that ran from 1933 to 1975 which saw the acquisition of two hundred works by mostly contemporary artists for the collection, including Stanley Spencer. The collection has a particular strength in holdings by artists with a connection to Cumbria. Developed in association with Grant Waters, Art Detective Group Leader: South East England, East England and the Midlands.
