Manchester Art Gallery is on the one hand known for its representative collection of work by nineteenth-century British artists, particularly the Pre-Raphaelites. This reflects that the nucleus of the collection came from the Royal Manchester Institution which showed a preference for acquiring contemporary art that continued when it became the City Art Gallery in 1883. However, equally significant is that Bradford collector Charles Rutherston presented his modern art collection of over 800 paintings and drawings to the Gallery in 1925 and notable contemporary works were acquired during both World Wars, resulting in one of the most important war art collections outside London. Part Four: William Ratcliffe to Nan Youngman.

Artists featured in this Curation: William Whitehead Ratcliffe (1870–1955), Anne Redpath (1895–1965), Alan Reynolds (1926–2014), Albert Richards (1919–1945), Bridget Riley (b.1931), Cecil Riley (1917–2015), Hannah Ritchie, William Patrick Roberts (1895–1980), Thomas Martine Ronaldson (1881–1942), Leonard Henry Rosoman (1913–2012), and 69 more
