Cartwright Hall Art Gallery opened in 1904 with monies provided by textile magnate Samuel Cunliffe-Lister who provided the site, Lister Park, and a newly designed building. It was named after Edward Cartwright, who invented the power-loom, the basis for Cunliffe-Lister's fortune. It holds a strong collection of Newlyn School and New English Art Club artists to represent Edwardian art. Gifts from the Contemporary Art Society and then Director Peter Bird, who began to collect Bradford-born artist David Hockney, and John Morley, who instigated the Bradford International Print Biennale, strengthened in depth the representation right across the century. Its South Asian contemporary collection is one of the collection's 21st Century highlights.
