Opened in 1878 and named Atkinson Art Gallery following a donation of £6,000 in 1875 by William Atkinson, a cotton manufacturer from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, who frequently visited Southport. It expanded by incorporating an adjacent bank in the 1920s. It holds excellent representative examples of artworks by major figures in Modern British Art, from those associated with the Camden Town Group and Scottish Colourists to local figures of national importance such as Philip Connard. Developed in association with Grant Waters, Art Detective Group Leader: South East England, East England and the Midlands.
