More about

Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres are for anyone who has been affected by cancer. Maggie's is about empowering people to live with, through and beyond cancer by bringing together professional help, communities of support and building design to create exceptional centres for cancer care. We have a collection of over 1000 drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures. The collection boasts some pieces by key British artists such as Grayson Perry, Eduardo Paolozzi and Anthony Gormley. This collection is spread across the fifteen Maggie's centres throughout the UK. Maggie's Fife, which was designed by the award-winning architect Zaha Hadid, is situated in the grounds of the Victoria Hospital in Fife. The building work started in November 2005 and finished in October 2006. Dr John Wilson, Consultant Physician, Fife Acute Hospitals said: 'A casual observer might think, from the outside, that Maggie's Fife was a bit dark and slightly forbidding but from the inside it is almost the opposite. It's light, it's curved and has got an outlook with lots of natural light coming in. In my more fanciful moments, I’ve thought that might be a metaphor. Cancer when it looms in your life looks pretty black and forbidding but it looks different from the inside. The building in a sense has a parallel with the cancer journey.' Anyone affected by cancer is welcome to drop in to the centre for a cup of tea and a chat, to browse the library or to access one of its courses. Maggie's Fife was designed to create a relaxed atmosphere, which includes pieces of art displayed throughout the centre. Maggie Keswick Jencks, the co-founder of Maggie's, was friends with contemporary artists including Eduardo Paolozzi, and so art in many Maggie's Centres is integrated with the design and atmosphere of the building.
