Painter whose subject was Modernist architecture, employing a stylised, formalised and exact style with a minimal repertoire of colours, angles, curves and paint qualities. Born in Glasgow, Paterson graduated with honours from the School of Art there, 1991–5, with an exchange to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, America, 1993. He won the Beck’s Futures Prize 2002, ICA and tour, 2002–3. Among his many other exhibitions were Art for People, Transmission Gallery, Glasgow, and Sick Building, Copenhagen, Denmark, both 1996; Supastore, Norwich Gallery, 1997; Host, Tramway, Glasgow, 1998; Halcyon Approach, Modern Institute, Glasgow, 1999; Gemini Project, Sculpture Park, Henry Moore Foundation, Leeds, 2000; and G3NY13, Casey Kaplan, New York, 2001.
