Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art opened in 2004, bringing together collections previously established by the Middlesbrough Art Gallery, the Cleveland Gallery and the Cleveland Craft Centre. Comprising over 2,350 works dating from the mid 1800s onwards, it has particular strengths in British artists and ceramics from the 20th Century as well as a significant emphasis on drawing, historically developed through the Cleveland Sketching Club. Developed in association with Grant Waters, Art Detective Group Leader: South East England, East England and the Midlands.

Artists featured in this Curation: John Armstrong (1893–1973), Robin Armstrong (b.1947), Frank Helmuth Auerbach (1931–2024), John Banting (1902–1972), John Bellany (1942–2013), Elizabeth V.
