The Hardmans’ House, situated just below the Anglican Cathedral on 59 Rodney Street, in the centre of Liverpool, is a fascinating place. It was once the home of the Irish-born photographer Edward Chambré Hardman (1898–1988), best known for his iconic image of the Birth of the Ark Royal. He lived there with his wife Margaret (1908–1970), who had been his assistant, from 1948. Shortly before his death he set up a Trust and bequeathed his house and contents to it, which was subsequently transferred to the National Trust in 2003.
