The National Trust for Scotland’s property on the Royal Mile is a typical seventeenth-century Old Town Edinburgh ‘land’ or tenement building (apartment block), which visitors can explore. Thomas Gledstanes, a merchant, bought the property on 20th December 1617. He and his family probably occupied an apartment on the third floor and rented out the rest of the building, including two luckenbooths (shops) at street level, to tenants from various backgrounds. On view are six display rooms furnished with objects of the period, including an original painted ceiling from 1620, to give a flavour of life in the seventeenth century.
The House is open from 1st April to 30th June, daily 10am–5pm; 1st July to 31st August, daily 10am–6.30pm; 1st September to 31st October, daily 10am–5pm.
