Harold Stanley, known as Jim Ede (1895–1990) was a curator at the Tate Gallery in London in the 1920s and 1930s. There he established contacts and friendships with leading Modernist artists in Britain, and so acquired important works by amongst others Constantin Brâncuși, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, David Jones and Christopher Wood. Jim and Helen came to Cambridge in 1956 and converted four cottages into a home, filled with their artwork collection in every corner. Every term time afternoon Jim personally gave guided tours of the house, 'a continuing way of life' rather than a museum. They gave the house and contents to Cambridge in 1966 before retiring to Edinburgh.
