Rousseau worked as a clerk collecting taxes on goods brought through one of the gates in the Paris city walls. But the landscape around this toll gate must be partly imaginary, and the vegetation seems to invade the buildings. Rousseau liked to paint invented landscapes in bright green tones; his jungle pictures were inspired by Paris’s Jardin des Plantes. As an artist, Rousseau was self-taught. His personal, naïve style was mocked by some contemporaries, but acclaimed by Picasso and other members of the avant-garde.
