Van Utrecht painted live animals as well as still life. This painting includes many of his favourite accessories set in a kitchen interior. It may have been cut down. There is an echo of his interest in the still-life paintings by the followers of Caravaggio which he must have seen in Italy, but it is less noticeable than in other works by him.
