This painting was acquired following an exhibition at the University of Surrey. Madeleine Enright was born in Paris and lived in Egypt, Thailand and Japan before taking up painting seriously during her stay in Singapore in the 1960s. There, her teacher and mentor was the Chinese artist Cheong Soo Pieng. Oriental influences in her work are obvious but her interest in art goes back as far as her childhood. Her mother was French and her Dutch father, Carel Hardes, was an important batik artist, supplying the major Paris and New York fashion houses in the 1920s. Later she remembers visiting the Romanian sculptor, Constantin Brancusi, in his Paris studio on several occasions. After leaving Singapore to settle in England in the 1970s, Madeleine had a number of solo exhibitions at the Drian Gallery, near Marble Arch in London, following this she exhibited at the University of Surrey, the Ashgate Gallery and the POSK Gallery, London.
