The work was commissioned by Dundee Partnership along with the penguins and squirrel. Information from the artist reads: ‘The brief for the project was that there had to be a connection with Dundee. The sculpture was to be more for children, to have humour and that street furniture or buildings were where they were to be sited, and also they could be hidden so that they were not obvious and could be discovered. Overall there had to be a sense of fun about them. The monkey connection was the ancient "Lady Mary Fair" held annually in Dundee where there had been an organ grinder with a small monkey, my idea being that the monkey had escaped and was pointing out on the notice board what events were on in Dundee. I then had the idea of him being mischievous and rearranging the lettering, of “Information” to read "In ma fair toon" which I know is not quite an anagram!’ The information board was designed by David F.
