The work was commissioned by Dundee Partnership along with the monkey and penguins. Information from the artist reads: ‘The brief for the project was that there had to be a connection with Dundee. The sculpture was to be more for children, to have humour and that street furniture or buildings were where they were to be sited, and also they could be hidden so that they were not obvious and could be discovered. Overall there had to be a sense of fun about them. The squirrel has the connection of Camperdown Park which had the largest population of red squirrels in Scotland at that time.’
