The portrait was painted as a commission in 1966. Antonia Fraser met Bowey through Carel Weight, who was a 'mentor' to the artist. The composition was worked out between the sitter and the artist, the intention being to portray 'a woman and a child who was nevertheless a working woman, i.e. a writer'. The portrait depicts Antonia Fraser with her fourth child and youngest daughter, Natasha Antonia. At the time it was made, the sitter was pregnant with her youngest son and sixth child who was born in spring 1967. She is shown in a 'deliberately informal pink (Dior) robe', reclining next to a pile of books that includes History of Toys (1964), one of her early publications, as well as her mother's book on Queen Victoria and her father's autobiography Born to Believe.
