The Apostle Thomas, who doubted the truth of Christ’s resurrection, is shown inserting two fingers into the wound Christ sustained when he was crucified. This tangible evidence dispels Thomas’s doubts and, by extension, those of any sceptics. Although few of his paintings survive, Polidoro was one of the most celebrated painters in sixteenth-century Italy. This altarpiece was commissioned by the Farone, an important Sicilian family. Although in compromised condition, its imposing composition and bold foreshortenings hint at Polidoro’s abilities.
