Dateable c.1765, the picture may be compared to the studies in expression Greuze exhibited at the Salon in the 1760s. Expression was central to Greuze's development of his emotive and often melodramatic moral genre scenes. In devoting so much attention to expression he was deliberately trespassing on the traditional preserve of the history painter, using it in much the same way as had Charles Le Brun a century earlier, and thereby attempting to invest his genre scenes with the moral authority of histories.
