‘Blue Well’ was inspired by a twelfth-century well that once stood adjacent to Ladywell Station. The well, according to historical sources, had a history of healing properties and was a source of sustenance for pilgrims travelling to Canterbury. The well is symbolic of life, rejuvenation, cleansing and purification. The watery interior of the well has been elevated and made visible, and creates a place of quiet contemplation for patients, staff and visitors to the hospital.
