a worn maker's mark at the base of the stone steps on the front face: TYAS & QUEST / SWINTON
Inscription description
an inscription on the front (north) face of the stone plinth: ERECTED / BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION / TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF BELTON / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918; and below this: "LEST WE FORGET" / KIPLING; an added sculpted stone open book has the dates 1939 and 1945 at the top of each page and a list of the men who lost their lives in the Second World War; on the front (north) and side (west) faces of the sandstone pillar are the incised and black painted (worn) names of the men who lost their lives in the First World War
