Painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in London, where he continued to live. He studied at Chelsea School of Art, 1948–52, then Royal College of Art, 1952–5. Whishaw had early success, gaining a travelling scholarship, drawing prize, Abbey Minor Scholarship and Spanish Government Scholarship. In 1960 he had the first of a string of solo shows at Roland, Browse & Delbanco; exhibiting one-man at the ICA in 1971; at Newcastle Polytechnic Art Gallery in 1979; Nicola Jacobs on several occasions in the 1980s; RWA, Bristol, 1993; Barbican Centre and tour, 1994–5; and Stephen Lacey Gallery, 2000, including several big works, inspiring a dramatic sense of enveloping space. Showed often at Summer Exhibition at RA and was elected a member of LG in 1978, the year he gained an Arts Council Award.
