Painter and teacher, a native of Edinburgh, son of the artist Samuel John Peploe. After leaving Edinburgh Academy in 1931 Peploe was five years at Edinburgh College of Art, then studied in studio of André Lhote in Paris. In pre-war years travelled widely in countries around the Mediterranean Sea, wartime service, 1940–6, including a period in the Special Operations Executive and a serious motorcycle crash in North Africa. Taught drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art 1955–79, then was made a governor, 1982. He was elected RSA in 1966. Solo shows included a series at Scottish Gallery from 1947, with a major memorial exhibition in 1995. National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh City Arts Centre and public galleries in Glasgow, Kirkcaldy and Perth hold examples.
