The Lillie Art Gallery in Milngavie owes its existence to Robert Lillie (1867–1949). Lillie was a banker and enthusiastic amateur artist who lived in the town and bequeathed money for the building of the Gallery, which opened in 1962. The Gallery has a collection of Scottish art that stretches from 1850 to the present day with names such as Francis Cadell, George Leslie Hunter, Samuel Peploe, John Bellany, William Crosbie, John Houston, Elizabeth V. Blackadder, Anne Redpath, Alexander Goudie and Joan Eardley. Artworks have been acquired for the permanent collection by purchase, gift, bequest and commission. The current collecting policy focuses on fine and applied art by artists who are Scottish by birth or residence. Any works not on display may be viewed by appointment.
