(bapt. Sudbury, Suffolk, 28 Apr. 1754; d London, 4 Jan. 1797). English painter and engraver, the nephew and only assistant of Thomas Gainsborough. He made copies and mezzotints of his uncle's pictures, completed others left unfinished at his death, and painted some original works in his manner. The best-known are probably his portraits of actors, examples of which are in the Garrick Club, London, but his landscapes are sometimes regarded as his best works.
