The College was founded by the University of Cambridge in 1965 as University College, changing its name to Wolfson College in 1973 following generous funding from the Wolfson Foundation. The College is now a mature institution and plays a full part in the life of the University of Cambridge, both intellectually and also culturally. Since opening, the College has steadily acquired a mixture of paintings in its collections. For the most part they represent donations and bequests to the College made by alumni and benefactors. A recent mural, commissioned to celebrate the College's 40th anniversary, depicts various members of academic and non-academic staff and students in various scenes that vividly capture the essence of College life.
