The Black Watch Castle & Museum collection consists of two and a half centuries worth of treasures relating to Scotland's oldest Highland Regiment. The collection was instigated in 1924 and brings to life the proud military heritage of this family Regiment. Originally displayed in the Officers' Mess at The Black Watch Depot, Perth, the collection has been on display at historic Balhousie Castle, Perth since the 1960s. In addition to our art collection, the Museum holds uniforms, medals, photographs, weapons and military equipment.
The prestige attached to The Black Watch, both at home and abroad, the picturesque quality of their appearance and the romantic connotations of their history have made them a favoured subject for leading professional artists over the past 300 years. Key works include 'Comrades, the 42nd Highlanders' by Robert Gibb, 'Archibald, Lord Montgomerie' by Angelica Kauffmann, and 'Colonel the Honourable John Maitland' by Joshua Reynolds.
