The paintings held within the Museum all relate in some way to the history of London's River Police. The most notable is the portrait of Patrick Colquhoun, the Scottish magistrate who, along with John Harriott was chiefly responsible for setting up London's Marine Police in 1798.

The Museum is contained within the Metropolitan Police Marine Unit Headquarters in Wapping. Visits can be arranged by appointment only and with a minimum of seven days advance notice.
