Originally built in 1881 for William Mowat, owner of the Carron Tan Works in Stonehaven, Viewmount became the HQ for Kincardine County Council in the early 1920s. On the creation of Grampian Regional Council in 1975, Viewmount became the HQ for Kincardine and Deeside District Council. The local government reorganisation of 1996 saw Viewmount become the Kincardine and Mearns Area Office of the new Aberdeenshire authority.
