Margaret Mellis studied at Edinbugh College of Art under the renowned colourist S. J. Peploe and later moved the St Ives in Cornwall, where she became a central figure in a group which included Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. At that time she made collages and reliefs but returned to painting after moving to Suffolk in 1950. She concentrated on still life and abstraction throughout this period, displaying her pure enjoyment of paint as a medium along the way.
