After studying at Bristol Polytechnic, Nick Jones turned to producing stain glass panels to make a living. A drying up of commissions in 1990 prompted a return to painting. He has always worked in the landscape tradition but his work has become more abstracted. His idea is to 'produce images that evoke and distill the experience of landscape – not a reproducing, but the feeling of what it's like to be in a particular place.' This picture captures the different effects of water – depth, reflection and colour. It also explores the liquid qualities of paint itself – splashing, soaking, almost dripping on the canvas. In this way, the process of painting, as much as the subject matter, is about water and liquid.
