This striking portrait is the result of the coming together of an accomplished artist at the start of his London career aiming to demonstrate his abilities and a sitter confident in his professional and personal position. Van Loo depicts the thirty-three-year-old Murray ‘in undress’, without a wig and wearing an informal velvet suit, waistcoat and hat. Nightcaps, often turban-like in shape, were used to keep the head warm when the hair was cut very short to accommodate a wig, or before the hair was formally dressed for the day. Such attire would only have been worn in private. Intimate portraits of this kind, of which there is only one other, were clearly painted for Murray’s close friends. This canvas was painted for Henry Hyde, Viscount Cornbury (1710–1753).
