The elegant, curved shapes pained black evoke the wherries shown sailing on the nearby river in Norwich School paintings from the 1820s onwards. The 35 mile Wherryman’s Way, which starts and finishes at Norwich and Gt Yarmouth railway stations, winds through existing footpaths, open marshes, redbuds, grazing meadows and riverside villages along the banks of the River Yare. The sculpture marking the route was commissioned in 2005 at a cost in the region of £200,000. The major contributor was the Broads & Rivers LEADER+ Programme, managed by DEFRA, with further input from the project partners: the Broads Authority, Norfolk County Council, South Norfolk District Council and the Chet Valley Development Partnership. All the sculpture was commissioned by Imagemakers, who used, but do not acknowledge, a team of designers with differing, but limited, talents and interests.
