A semi-naked woman reclines in an Arcadian landscape. She has been identified as Venus, the classical goddess of love, although there is nothing to confirm this. Palma and his contemporaries Giorgione and Titian specialised in such depictions of beautiful women. Paintings like this were often found in bedchambers in sixteenth-century Italy. Parts of this picture, such as the rocks, remain unfinished. It may have been left in Palma’s studio at the time of his death.
