Levy was the son of Jewish-Russian immigrants who settled in Manchester. He studied at Manchester School of Art and taught for many years at the School of Architecture, becoming art critic for the 'Manchester City and Evening News'. Religious iconography was a dominant theme in Levy’s work, but his central theme was the human condition.
