The statue shows Tom Dress as a 25-year-old soldier. He was a private in the 7th Battalion The Green Howards, and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in the Battle of Arras. On 12th May 1917, despite being shot twice, he conveyed an important message from Battalion Headquarters to the front line trenches. He received his VC on his 25th birthday. The memorial was unveiled on the centenary of these events.
