The sculpture commemorates the men of the Harland and Wolff shipyard, especially those who built the 'Titanic'. Erected as part of East Belfast Partnership's Re-Imaging Newtownards Road project.

plaque on railings: TITANIC YARDMEN 401 / The Yardmen is a Titanic centenary sculpture that celebrates the history and / achievements of East Belfast's shipbuilding workforce. The people of Belfast / are proud of their shipbuilding heritage. For over 150 years the names / Harland and Wolff have been universally known for excellence is shipbuilding. / Thousands of men worked and sustained their families through the yards (sic) order / books. The shipyards (sic) years of production saw the creation of 1,700 large ships / the most famous being the Titanic, a great ship now locked into worldwide / history and romantic myth, fact and myth riveted together. / This sculpture honours all generations of Yardmen and is a tribute to / their culture, life and legacy. To the memory of men who built giants.
