The River Teign and Bishops Steignton show distantly across a wooded valley, with the village of Newton Abbot in the middle ground to the right. Towne adopts the compositional device of a tree and dark hill in the foreground, and the gently sweep of the wooded hills shows the influence of the French 17th century painter Claude Lorrain.
