The figure sits bareback on the horse holding his right hand to his mouth as if calling. The brief given by IPC for this commission was the theme of ‘communication’ and relates to the company’s role in magazine publishing, which David Wynne chose to represent through the idea of the messenger. To prepare the work, Wynne travelled to Rome and Venice to see the famous statue of Marcus Aurelius and the horses of Saint Mark, and studied Arabian horses at the Milla Lauqen Stud.
