These sandstone maquette are the models for the sculpture ‘The Family’ commissioned by Gateshead Council in 1988. Three larger figures made of Cumbrian limestone were specifically sited outside the Civic Centre near to the entrance for Birth Marriage and Deaths to mark the important passage through life.

The full-scale figures and models were hand carved by the sculptor Gordon Young to celebrate relationships common to the whole family starting with youth and ending in old age. They were installed in 1991. The style of the figures is generalised, linking to African art, and symbols of hope and warmth and human friendships.
