Copied (after 1840 on the basis of a label on the back of the board) from a version of the portrait by Reynolds (q.v.) of Louis-Philippe-Joseph, duc de Chartres and later duc d’Orléans (1747–1793) who was known as Philippe Égalité 1792–1793. During the Revolution he voted for the death of his cousin Louis XVI, but was himself guillotined in 1793. Several versions of Reynolds’s portrait are known. The principal version, painted for George IV in 1785, was severely damaged by fire in 1824 but is still in the Royal Collection. Roqueplan’s interest in English portraiture was shared by many French Romantic painters.
